AP Biology Labs
 Molecular Biology & Biotechnology
This lab is a great example of how using a computer lab or a set of portable computers, a biology class can use bioinformatics methods for a high-level inquiry project at no cost and minimal set-up time. Students will gain an appreciation that computational approaches are integral to all aspects of biology, and that many fascinating questions remain unanswered and open to new approaches.

In this lab, students serve as public health specialists and design a DNA probe to diagnose carriers of Sickle Cell Anemia. They use the UCSC Genome Browser and Primer3 primer design websites. The accompanying PowerPoint reviews genetic disease, recessive inheritance, and circulatory system physiology.
